Tunisian Crochet Basics
- Tunisian crochet projects are usually made up of a foundation row, multiple forward and return pass rows, and, in most cases, a bind off row.
- A hook 2–3 sizes larger than the yarn label recommends is often helpful.
- Always swatch for proper tension, especially since hook style, yarn choice, and stitch pattern can all affect your results.
A video tutorial is available from CrochetKim.
Front and Back Post Stitches are most often used together to help control curl in Tunisian crochet. When paired, they create a dense, highly textured fabric that is also reversible.
These stitches can be worked as variations of both Tunisian Simple Stitch and Tunisian Double Stitch. The stitch placement creates raised post-like texture by working around the spaces between stitches rather than under the usual front vertical bar.
Foundation Row
Begin with a foundation row.
- Chain any even number of stitches.
- Beginning in the second chain from the hook, pull up a loop in each chain across the row.
- Complete a basic return pass.
For more detailed instruction on the foundation row and return pass, see the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) tutorial.
Tunisian Front & Back Post Stitch – Simple Stitch Variation
Front Post – Simple
Forward Pass: Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook.
Insert your hook from front to back between the vertical bars of the first and second stitches, then bring it from back to front between the second and third stitches. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
Repeat this sequence across the row to the last stitch.
Last stitch: Work a TSS in the final edge stitch.
Return Pass: Work a basic return pass.
Back Post – Simple
Forward Pass: Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook.
Insert your hook from back to front between the vertical bars of the first and second stitches, then bring it from front to back between the second and third stitches. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
Repeat this sequence across the row to the last stitch.
Last stitch: Work a TSS in the final edge stitch.
Return Pass: Work a basic return pass.
Tunisian Front & Back Post Stitch – Double Stitch Variation
Front Post – Double
Forward Pass: Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook and chain 1.
Yarn over, insert your hook from front to back between the vertical bars of the first and second stitches, then bring it from back to front between the second and third stitches. Yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
Repeat this sequence across the row to the last stitch.
Last stitch: Work a TDS in the final edge stitch.
Return Pass: Work a basic return pass.
Back Post – Double
Forward Pass: Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook and chain 1.
Insert your hook from back to front between the vertical bars of the first and second stitches, then bring it from front to back between the second and third stitches. Yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
Repeat this sequence across the row to the last stitch.
Last stitch: Work a TDS in the final edge stitch.
Return Pass: Work a basic return pass.
Bind Off
Bind off in pattern, completing each stitch with a slip stitch.
- Insert your hook in the next stitch placement as established by the pattern.
- Pull up a loop.
- Pull that loop through the loop already on your hook.
- Repeat across the row, keeping the bind off even.
Last stitch: Work the final edge stitch neatly, chain 1, cut the yarn, and pull through to fasten off.
Front and back post stitches are especially useful when you want a textured, reversible fabric and need to reduce curl in your Tunisian crochet.
I hope this tutorial helps you feel more comfortable with Tunisian Front & Back Post Stitches. They are wonderful stitches to know when you want extra texture, a reversible fabric, and better curl control.
Have a happy day!
