Tunisian Crochet Basics
- Tunisian crochet projects are usually made up of a foundation row, multiple forward and return pass rows, and, in most cases, a bind off row.
- A hook 2–3 sizes larger than the yarn label recommends is often helpful.
- Always swatch for proper tension, especially since hook style, yarn choice, and stitch pattern can all affect your results.
A video tutorial for the Honeycomb stitch pattern is also available from TL Yarn Crafts.
The Tunisian Honeycomb Stitch is created in a 2-row repeat by combining Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) and Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS). Row 1 alternates TSS and TPS across the row, while Row 2 alternates TPS and TSS. It is usually worked over an odd number of stitches.
This stitch pattern has little to no curl because it alternates front-starting and back-starting stitch positions. It is beautiful on its own, and adding a contrast color on the return pass when working in the round can make the texture stand out even more.
Honeycomb Stitch can also serve as a built-in border, much like a garter-stitch selvage in knitting.
Foundation Row
Begin with a foundation row.
- Chain any odd number of stitches.
- Beginning in the second chain from the hook, pull up a loop in each chain across the row.
- Complete a basic return pass.
For more detailed instruction on the foundation row and return pass, see the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) tutorial.
Honeycomb Stitch with a Single-Ended Hook
This stitch pattern is worked in a 2-row repeat.
Row 1 Forward Pass
Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook.
*TSS in the next stitch, TPS in the following stitch.* Repeat from * to * until 2 stitches remain. Work TSS in both remaining stitches.
Row 1 Return Pass
Work a basic return pass.
Row 2 Forward Pass
Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook.
*TPS in the next stitch, TSS in the following stitch.* Repeat from * to * to the end of the row.
Row 2 Return Pass
Work a basic return pass.
Continue repeating Rows 1 and 2 to the desired length, ending with a Row 1.
Bind Off Row
Bind off in pattern.
Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook.
*Insert your hook as if to TPS in the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Continue pulling that loop through the loop already on your hook as you would for a slip stitch in traditional crochet.
Insert your hook as if to TSS in the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Continue pulling that loop through the loop already on your hook.*
Repeat from * to * to the last stitch.
Last stitch: Insert your hook under both vertical bars of the last stitch and finish the slip stitch. Chain 1, cut the yarn, and pull through the loop to fasten off.
Honeycomb Stitch is a wonderful choice when you want a textured fabric with little curl. The alternating TSS and TPS create a balanced surface that looks beautiful in both solid colors and textured projects.
I hope this tutorial helps you feel more comfortable with Tunisian Honeycomb Stitch. It is a beautiful pattern with lovely texture and a nice balance that makes it especially enjoyable to use.
Have a happy day!
