Tunisian Crochet Basics
- Tunisian crochet projects are usually made up of a foundation row, multiple forward and return pass rows, and, in most cases, a bind off row.
- A hook 2–3 sizes larger than the yarn label recommends is often helpful.
- Always swatch for proper tension, especially since hook style, yarn choice, and stitch pattern can all affect your results.
A video tutorial for Tunisian Double Stitch is also available from Darlene Michaud.
The Tunisian Double Stitch (TDS) is another useful stitch for enhancing basic Tunisian crochet stitches. It is made much like a traditional double crochet stitch, but the stitch is not fully closed until the row is completed. This technique adds height, texture, and density to stitches such as Tunisian Simple Stitch, Tunisian Knit Stitch, and Tunisian Reverse Stitch, as well as their variations.
Tunisian Double Stitch also creates a more open fabric with lovely drape. Another bonus is that it tends to have little to no curl.
Foundation Row
Begin this stitch, and nearly all Tunisian crochet projects, with a foundation row.
- Chain any number of stitches.
- Beginning in the second chain from the hook, pull up a loop in each chain across the row.
- Complete a basic return pass.
For more detailed instruction on the foundation row and return pass, see the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) tutorial.
Working Tunisian Double Stitch
TDS is worked by chaining 1, then making a yarn over before inserting the hook into the next stitch.
Forward Pass
Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook and chain 1.
Yarn over, insert your hook under the next vertical bar, and pull up a loop.
Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook.
Repeat this sequence across the row until you reach the last stitch.
Last stitch of the forward pass: Yarn over, insert your hook under both vertical bars of the final edge stitch, pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
Return Pass
Work a basic return pass: yarn over and draw through one loop only, then yarn over and draw through two loops across the row until only one loop remains on your hook.
Continue repeating the forward pass and return pass until your work reaches the desired length.
Bind Off Row
Bind off in pattern, completing each stitch with a slip stitch.
- Work the next stitch in pattern as for Tunisian Double Stitch.
- Pull up the loop and complete the stitch placement as needed.
- Slip that loop through the loop already on your hook.
- Repeat across the row, keeping the bind off neat and even.
Last stitch: Work the final edge stitch neatly, chain 1, cut the yarn, and pull through to fasten off.
Tunisian Double Stitch is a great choice when you want more height and drape in your fabric without the heavy curl common to some other Tunisian stitches.
I hope this tutorial helps you feel more comfortable with Tunisian Double Stitch. It is a wonderful stitch to know when you want more height, texture, and a softer drape in your Tunisian crochet projects.
Have a happy day!
