Tunisian Crochet Basics
- Tunisian crochet projects are usually made up of a foundation row, multiple forward and return pass rows, and, in most cases, a bind off row.
- A hook 2–3 sizes larger than the yarn label recommends is often helpful.
- Always swatch for proper tension, especially since hook style, yarn choice, and stitch pattern can all affect your results.
A video tutorial for Tunisian Extended Stitch – Simple (TES-S) is also available from CrochetKim.
The Tunisian Extended Stitch – Simple (TES-S) creates a lighter, more open fabric than traditional Tunisian Simple Stitch. By adding just one small chain after pulling up each loop, you can create a fabric with more drape and breathability.
This is a wonderful stitch when you want the look of Tunisian Simple Stitch but prefer a softer, more relaxed fabric. It is also a nice option when you want to reduce or avoid the curl that often comes with denser Tunisian stitches.
The same idea can be applied to other basic Tunisian stitches as well. Adding a simple chain after pulling up a loop can completely change the feel of the finished fabric.
Foundation Row
Begin this stitch, and nearly all Tunisian crochet projects, with a foundation row.
- Chain any number of stitches.
- Beginning in the second chain from the hook, pull up a loop in each chain across the row.
- Complete a basic return pass.
For more detailed instruction on the foundation row and return pass, see the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) tutorial.
Working Tunisian Extended Stitch – Simple
TES-S is worked much like Tunisian Simple Stitch, but with an added chain 1 after each loop is pulled up.
Forward Pass
Insert your hook from right to left behind the next front vertical bar, keeping the hook at the front of the work rather than inserting from front to back.
Yarn over and pull up a loop, then chain 1. Leave that chain-1 loop on your hook.
Repeat across the row to the last stitch.
Last stitch of the forward pass: Insert your hook under both vertical bars of the final edge stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop, then chain 1.
Return Pass
Yarn over and draw through one loop only.
Then yarn over and draw through two loops across the row until only one loop remains on your hook.
Continue repeating the forward pass and return pass until your work reaches the desired length.
Bind Off Row
Bind off in pattern, beginning the row just as you would for Tunisian Extended Stitch – Simple.
- Insert your hook as for Tunisian Simple Stitch.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop.
- Chain 1.
- Pull that chain-1 loop through the loop already on your hook to create the bind off.
- Repeat across the row to the last stitch.
Last stitch: Insert your hook under both vertical bars of the final edge stitch, pull up a loop, chain 1, complete the slip stitch, chain 1, cut the yarn, and pull through to fasten off.
If your edge stitches begin to look too loose or loopy, you may find that the extra chain 1 is not necessary in the last stitch of the forward pass. Check your edge tension and adjust as needed.
This extended concept can also be used with other Tunisian stitches, including Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) and Tunisian Full Stitch (TFS). Adding a chain 1 after each loop is pulled up creates a taller, more open stitch with extra drape and a lighter feel. It’s a simple change, but it can make a big difference in the overall look and texture of your fabric.
I hope this tutorial helps you feel more comfortable with Tunisian Extended Stitch – Simple. It is a lovely variation when you want a lighter fabric, more drape, and a softer overall look.
Have a happy day!
