It's been quite a while since I've had the determination to continue a large and difficult project like this. Perhaps the last time was Jane Crowfoot’s Fruit Garden, which I worked in thread back in late 2022. There is something deeply satisfying about staying with a piece long enough to watch it truly begin to materialize.
This centerpiece is doing exactly that. In every way, it is becoming something beautiful, and I am so very glad I found it tucked away in such a small, almost obscure little booklet. I am ever thankful to antiquepatternlibrary.org for preserving these remarkable texts from our past and making it possible for us to rediscover them.
Rounds 45–52
Approximately 27" / 68.5 cm in diameter.
Original Pattern
The original pattern was written in UK terminology.
My rewrite below is given in US terms.

Notes Before Round 45
Because I changed the starting position of the Edelweiss section, a small adjustment to Round 45 is needed. After that, the work should be back on track with the original pattern.
Looking ahead at the original pattern, it instructs us to repeat Round 46 three more times. That would still leave 676 sts in Round 49.
Round 50, however, is a 33-st repeat worked 21 times, for a total of 693 sts. That means the stitch count would fall short by 17 sts. To account for that, I added increases over the next three rounds.
I staggered the increases in these rounds to avoid forming obvious increase lines in the design.
Rounds 45–51
Round 45: Sl st to ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in same ch-3 sp, *ch 12, tr in next ch-3 sp, ch 12, sc in next ch-3 sp; rep from * 25 more times. On last rep, sub last sc with sl st to beg sc. (26 sc, 26 tr, 52 ch-12 sps)
Round 46: Ch 1, sc in joining st, *sc in each of the next 12 ch sts, sc in tr, sc in each of the next 12 ch sts, sc in sc; rep from * 25 more times. On last rep, sub last sc with sl st to beg sc. (676 sc)
Round 47: Ch 1, (sc 111, 2 sc in next st), (sc 112, 2 sc in next st) 4 times, sc 111, 2 sc in next st, sl st to beg sc. (6 increases, 682 sts)
Round 48: Ch 1, sc 55, 2 sc in next st, (sc 113, 2 sc in next st) 5 times, sc 56, sl st to beg sc. (6 increases, 688 sts)
Round 49: Ch 1, sc 68, 2 sc in next st, sc 137, 2 sc in next st, sc 136, 2 sc in next st, sc 137, 2 sc in next st, sc 136, 2 sc in next st, sc 69, sl st to beg sc. (5 increases, 693 sts)
Round 50: Ch 1, (sc 10, ch 8, anchor the ch-8 loop in the 6th sc back, 15 sc in ch-8 lp) 3 times, *sc 13, ch 8, anchor the ch-8 loop in the 6th sc back, 15 sc in ch-8 lp, (sc 10, ch 8, anchor the ch-8 loop in the 6th sc back, 15 sc in ch-8 lp) twice; rep from * 19 more times, sc 3, join to beginning sc. (63 filled ch-8 lps, arranged in groups of 3 with 4 sc between each loop and 7 sc between each group) Note: Anchor the ch-8 loop in the same manner as Round 6.
Round 51: Ch 25 counts as the 1st dtr + ch-20 sp, *sk 1 ring, sc in 8th st of next ring, ch 20, sk 1 ring, dtr in 4th sc between the group of 3 rings, ch 20; rep from * 19 more times, sk 1 ring, sc in 8th st of next ring, ch 20, sk 1 ring, sl st to 5th ch of initial ch-25. (21 sc, 21 dtr, 42 ch-20 sps)
Round 52: Afghan stitch pyramids — switch to larger hook.
*FwdP — sl st to 1st ch of ch-20, draw up a loop from each of the next 19 chs. 20 lps on hook
RetP — (yo, draw through 2 loops) until 3 loops rem on hook, yo, draw through 3.
FwdP — sk the vb directly below the hook and the next vb, draw up loops in the next 16 vbs, sk 1 vb, draw up a loop under both vbs of the last st (edge st). 18 lps on hook
RetP — (yo, draw through 2 loops) until 3 loops rem on hook, yo, draw through 3.
FwdP — sk the vb directly below the hook and the next vb, draw up loops in the next 14 vbs, sk 1 vb, draw up a loop under both vbs of the last st (edge st). 16 lps on hook
RetP — (yo, draw through 2 loops) until 3 loops rem on hook, yo, draw through 3.
FwdP — sk the vb directly below the hook and the next vb, draw up loops in the next 12 vbs, sk 1 vb, draw up a loop under both vbs of the last st (edge st). 14 lps on hook
RetP — (yo, draw through 2 loops) until 3 loops rem on hook, yo, draw through 3.
FwdP — sk the vb directly below the hook and the next vb, draw up loops in the next 10 vbs, sk 1 vb, draw up a loop under both vbs of the last st. 12 lps on hook
RetP — (yo, draw through 2 loops) until 3 loops rem on hook, yo, draw through 3.
FwdP — sk the vb directly below the hook and the next vb, draw up loops in the next 8 vbs, sk 1 vb, draw up a loop under both vbs of the last st. 10 lps on hook
RetP — (yo, draw through 2 loops) until 3 loops rem on hook, yo, draw through 3.
FwdP — sk the vb directly below the hook and the next vb, draw up loops in the next 6 vbs, sk 1 vb, draw up a loop under both vbs of the last st. 8 lps on hook
RetP — (yo, draw through 2 loops) until 3 loops rem on hook, yo, draw through 3.
FwdP — sk the vb directly below the hook and the next vb, draw up loops in the next 4 vbs, sk 1 vb, draw up a loop under both vbs of the last st. 6 lps on hook
RetP — (yo, draw through 2 loops) until 3 loops rem on hook, yo, draw through 3.
FwdP — sk the vb directly below the hook and the next vb, draw up loops in the next 2 vbs, sk 1 vb, draw up a loop under both vbs of the last st. 4 lps on hook
RetP — (yo, draw through 2 loops) until 3 loops rem on hook, yo, draw through 3.
FwdP — sk the vb directly below the hook and the next vb, sk 1 vb, draw up a loop under both vbs of the last st. 2 lps on hook
RetP — yo, draw through 2 loops. Ch 1.
With smaller hook, loosely sl st in back loop on end-of-row edge sts and next sc or dtr of Round 51, whichever applies.
Repeat from * 41 more times. After completing the 42nd pyramid, sl st to 1st tr of the round.
Blocking is not necessary at this stage, but I do recommend laying the piece out to be sure it is sitting smoothly and that no segments have been missed.
