I’m so pleased with this project!

I lightly blocked it to really show off the Edelweiss pattern, and this section is now measuring about 21 inches in diameter.

Rounds 19–44
Approximately 21" in diameter

Original Pattern

Terminology Note

The original pattern was written in UK terminology. My rewrite below is given in US terms.

Mini Stitch Key

Abbreviations used in this section:

  • asc = anchored single crochet
  • bb = back bump of chain
  • ch-sp = chain space
  • pm = place marker
  • scdec = single crochet decrease
  • sexttr = sextuple treble crochet (yo 7 times)
  • sk = skip
  • sp = space
  • stsc = stacked single crochet

Notes Before Round 19

Keep your chain stitches a bit loose here, since you’ll be working into the back bumps in the next round.

Round 19 note: The original pattern appears to contain an error in this round. It indicates ch 18 between the sexttr and the sc, but this should be ch 9.

Rounds 19–24

Round 19: Ch 19 counts as the 1st sexttr (yo 7 times) + ch-9 sp, *sc in ch-point of pyramid, ch 9, sexttr in sl st between pyramids, ch 9; rep from * 14 more times, sc in ch-point of pyramid, ch 9, sl st to 10th ch of initial ch 19. (16 sc, 16 sexttr, 32 ch-9 sps)

Round 20: Ch 1, (sc in sexttr, sc in the bb of each ch in ch-9 sp, sc in sc over pyramid, sc in the bb of each ch in ch-9 sp) 16 times, sl st to 1st sc of rnd. (320 sc)

Round 21: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to 1st sc of rnd. (320 sc)

Round 22: Rep Round 21. (320 sc)

Round 23: Rep Round 21. (320 sc)

Round 24: Rep Round 21, scdec every 40th st. (312 sc)

Stitch count note for Round 25:

I have 320 sc to work with at the end of Round 23, but the repeat pattern of Round 25 works over 12 sts.

320 ÷ 12 = 26.67

The photo indicates 26 repeats, and 26 × 12 = 312. That leaves 8 sc too many, so I decreased 8 sts symmetrically to make the next round work out evenly. I found it easiest to incorporate those decreases into Round 24.

Beginning the Edelweiss Section

Round 25 begins what the original pattern describes as the Edelweiss pattern and continues for 20 rounds.

The original pattern instructs us to repeat from Round 27, increasing the ch-10 spaces evenly to ch-18 spaces until all 20 rounds are complete. Once the rhythm of the section is established, the rounds do become fairly intuitive. Even so, I chose to write them out properly, round by round, so the progression is clear and there is less room for confusion while working.

Unfortunately, the end of Round 28 leaves the work too far from the proper starting point for Round 29, requiring too many slip stitches to reach it.

As I’ve said before, my goal is not to rewrite the pattern, but to clarify and simplify the process. I adjusted the starting position to eliminate the need to fasten off and rejoin. This requires a set of stacked single crochets at the start of some rounds, but it gives the piece more continuity.

I don’t usually use accessories like tension rings, but on this project I used a bit of vet wrap on my middle finger to cushion it while working into the chain stitches. It sped up the process quite a bit and saved my finger from painful pokes from the small hook.

asc (anchored sc): Slip stitch into the designated stitch or chain space, ch 1, then work 1 sc in the same stitch or chain space. This creates a sturdier, similar-looking base for the stitches worked into the previous chain stitches.

stsc (stacked sc): Work 1 sc in the assigned stitch or chain loop, then insert the hook under the front vertical leg of the sc just made, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, and draw through both loops on the hook. Repeat as many times as instructed in the pattern. Place a stitch marker in the last stacked sc so it is easy to distinguish from the next stitch.

Light blocking really brought this section to life, and I’m excited to see how the next stretch begins building on the Edelweiss motif. full-width
