Tunisian Simple Crossed Stitch - Aligned

Tunisian Crochet Basics

  • Tunisian crochet projects are usually made up of a foundation row, multiple forward and return pass rows, and, in most cases, a bind off row.
  • A hook 2–3 sizes larger than the yarn label recommends is often helpful.
  • Always swatch for proper tension, especially since hook style, yarn choice, and stitch pattern can all affect your results.

A video tutorial for the aligned simple crossed stitch is also available from CrochetKim.

The Tunisian Simple Crossed Stitch – Aligned is a variation of Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) worked over an even number of stitches. This stitch combination adds texture and creates a striking crossed pattern across the surface of the fabric.

This stitch has a moderate tendency to curl, and it also pulls the fabric inward horizontally. Because of that, you may find that you need a larger hook than expected. A looser tension and blocking can also help improve the finished fabric.

Foundation Row

Begin with a foundation row.

  1. Chain any even number of stitches.
  2. Beginning in the second chain from the hook, pull up a loop in each chain across the row.
  3. Complete a basic return pass.

For more detailed instruction on the foundation row and return pass, see the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) tutorial.

Aligned Simple Crossed Stitch

This stitch pattern is worked in a 1-row repeat.

Forward Pass

Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook.

*Skip the next vertical bar, insert your hook as for TSS in the following vertical bar and pull up a loop. Then insert your hook under the skipped vertical bar and pull up a loop.*

This creates the crossed stitch.

Repeat from * to * across the row until one stitch remains.

Last stitch: Work a TSS in the final edge stitch.

Return Pass

Work a basic return pass.

Continue repeating this row to the desired length.

Bind Off Row

Bind off in pattern.

Skip the first vertical bar directly beneath the loop on your hook.

*Skip the next vertical bar, insert your hook in the following vertical bar and pull up a loop. Continue pulling that loop through the loop already on your hook.

Insert your hook under the skipped vertical bar, pull up a loop, and continue pulling it through the loop already on your hook.*

Repeat from * to * across the row to the last stitch.

Last stitch: Insert your hook under both vertical bars of the final edge stitch, complete the slip stitch, chain 1, cut the yarn, and pull through to fasten off.

Helpful Note:
This stitch pattern can draw the fabric inward, so be sure to swatch before beginning a project. A larger hook and relaxed tension can make a noticeable difference.

I hope this tutorial helps you feel more comfortable with Tunisian Simple Crossed Stitch – Aligned. It is a fun stitch to use when you want texture and a bold crossed design in your Tunisian crochet.

Have a happy day!
